Verbs, along with nouns , are one of the most important parts of a sentence. Its function is basically to describe the action carried out by the noun, so that without the verb the sentence would be incomplete. Therefore, it is essential that children become familiar with verbs from an early age and learn to identify them within the sentence, thus being able to understand the links that relate to the different parts of a sentence.
What is a verb? Its function within the sentence
Verbs are the variable words that refer to the action or condition in a sentence. Basically, they offer information about the subject, either highlighting the action carried out, the state or process in which it is found or its existence or condition per se. Its main function is to be the syntactic core of the predicate. Such is the case of the sentence “José ran the marathon yesterday” , where the verb ran indicates the action that José performed yesterday, becoming the main part of the predicate.
Generally, verbs are behind that change the subject, but sometimes can also be placed before the subject. This can be seen more clearly in the case of the sentences “Angela was born yesterday” or “Yesterday Angela was born” . Another peculiarity of verbs is that, sometimes, they can be accompanied by complements that add information about the action being carried out, as in the case of ” Greeted my aunts” where it is specified that the greeting was addressed to their aunts.
The kinds of verbs
Broadly speaking, verbs are classified into personal and non-personal forms. Personal forms are those that can be conjugated in a tense, agreeing in number and person with the subject of the sentence, as in the case of the sentence “I work in a school . ” In turn, the personal forms of the verb can be regular or irregular, depending on their conjugation.
Regular verbs are those that conform to the conjugation patterns, without altering the stem or ending, which is nothing more than the final morpheme of a word. This type of verb is conjugated by adding the inflections that correspond to each grammatical person, according to the mode and time. They are regular verbs: sing, fear or leave. On the other hand, irregular verbs are understood to be those that have particular conjugations that do not conform to the standard conjugation models. since it modifies their root or ending, such as the verbs to put, hang, feel or die.
On the other hand, the non-personal forms of the verb are those that do not conjugate and, therefore, do not agree with the subject in number and person. The three main types are: the infinitive, the gerund, and the participle. Those verbs ending in ar, er or ir, such as singing, eating or living, are considered infinitives, while verbs ending in ando or iendo, such as singing or eating, are classified as gerund. On the other hand, participle verbs are considered those that end in ado, ido, to, so and cho, as sung or drunk.
